Continuation of Insurance Benefits

An employee who becomes ineligible to participate in an employer's group health insurance plan may continue coverage, at his/her "own expense", for 78 weeks or until able to obtain alternative group insurance coverage. The surviving or former spouse of an employee and the dependents covered by the group plan may also continue coverage, at the employee's expense for up to 156 weeks.

When a company or plant closes or relocates, an employer with more than 100 employees must continue health insurance coverage for those employees who remain unemployed up to a maximum of 120 days after the plan relocation or closing date. Employees may be able to extend this period by another 78 weeks at their own expense.
